Kindergarten - Term 1
We have the privilege of having the Responsible Pet Educator visit the kinder groups with her dog and talk to the children about how to approach dogs in a safe manner and what to do if faced with an angry animal away from its home. The educator also offer parent sessions to talk over any concerns parents may have about their children feeling comfortable with dogs.
Kindergarten - Term 2
We start our Orientation Program with Cowes Primary School with visits across to the school to do Specialist classes such as Library, PE. Drama, Music, Japanese or IT. With the proximity of the centre to the school, as well as the close relationship the school has with the Early Learning Centre, easily allows these visits to be included into our curriculum. As we take the 5 minute walk into the school grounds the children are usually very exciting to be visiting the “big school”.
Another facet of the Orientation Program is the pairing of Grade 5 children to be the kindergarten children’s” buddies” when they start at the school the following year. The buddies come to visit the children at the kindergarten at least twice during the year so that each party is aware of who they can look out for in the school playground the next year.
Families are invited to be part of the program through parent help rosters where parents take turns to stay and join in activities each day, helping on excursions with supervising children or coming along to Fathers Nights/Special Visitors nights. We also welcome parents who like to help with gardening, playing an instrument, cooking or storytelling to name a few of the varied talents parents have to offer our programs.
The local PINP Rangers kindly volunteer their time each year for a torchlight night which of course takes place after dark when we can use our torches. The Rangers make damper with the children, and we have a Sing-along around a campfire. We look for animals with our torches in the playground and to keep the energy up join in a sausage sizzle for dinner.
Additional Kindergarten Activities
With the importance of healthy eating and physical activity we also plan for Breakfast at Kindergarten. The children wear their pyjamas to kinder and eat their brekkie.
For fun days we include Teddy Bears Picnics and Footy Days that include educational activities incorporated around these themes.
We also have incursions which have included Australian animals visiting for the children to touch and see and a drama/dance visit in which the children help with the story telling through dressing up and acting.
Our program emphasis is all about engaging children in a wide variety of activities and opportunities based on the interests they have, what is happening in the community, the developmental level of each child and the intentional teaching of the staff. We try to make kinder a fun place to be where relationships are developed and learning is taking place at every turn.
